Just as rivers have names often derived from surrounding folklore, it stands to reason the same should be so for waterfalls.
I'm not astute enough in geography or history to know the origin of the name Niagra Falls. I did grow up watching my mama use Niagra starch on laundry days, but never thought such a natural wonder was named after laundry starch.
So what should be the name of the falls at the head of Bull River in the American Tobacco Historic District?
Until a better name arises, I have chosen Victoria Falls, not a namesake for the falls in South Africa, but a name spun from Historic District folklore.
It was not really folklore, for the term folklore implies a touch of fiction.
No, these falls are now Victoria Falls because a new tenant in the Reed Building whose first name is Victoria was captured dangling her bare feet in Bull River, just downstream from the falls at the head of the river under the coal shed.
If a corporate executive has a free enough mind to relieve the stress from the business and commercial world by shedding shoes for the soothing cool waters of Bull River to wash over her feet, then why not name the falls after her.
Just think, Victoria Falls, head of the Bull River. Would you call that ecletic, contradictory, complimentary, or an ingenuous idea?
